Creation of the Cool Anger Management Program
Joseph D. Hayes is a licensed counselor in the state of Texas. He has 5 years experience working with the criminal justice population at an Out-Patient Substance Abuse clinic called Crossroads Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse. This is where he began his studies into working with clients that are angry. He attended many CEUs workshops on anger management and finally went to a TACADA workshop and was presented with an instructor certificate of certification of the Anger Management "RETHINK" Program. Then he compiled the bits and pieces of education and combined with theory's of what he perceived as essential and pragmatic in working with the angry client. Mr. Hayes has developed a model called cool anger. This combines educational, awareness, insight, cognitive and real life applications to bring the client into self empowerment to change. Yes the client chooses to change his behaviors, and thinking on his own desire. Mr. Hayes believes angry reactions are learned behaviors and incorporated thoughts that were utilized as coping mechanisms in life development. Now that we have aged and matured these coping skills are no longer useful to the client. The client identifies himself in having self destructive beliefs and experiences and redirects his energy into positive self growth. Mr. Hayes taught this approach for 6 years in Hunt County for both the criminal and civil courts. Mr. Hayes has had tremendous positive responses from his cliental and how they have used the program to get their life back on track. Now today Mr. Hayes continues to teach anger management and runs a small private practice in Mount Pleasant. He has developed this online course with the very same objectives and material that has been successful with his cliental. Former County Attorney Kieth Willaford has written a recommendation for Mr. Hayes Anger management Program shortly after leaving office. With today's technology, learning Anger Management is more covenient and cost effective. Yet there are many whom shun anything over the internet, or more technological. Today people take the Kids First Program, Defensive Driving, and even get certified college degrees over the internet. These programs have met with success and I feel this program will satisfy any skeptic, if they are open to viewing and participating by taking the course. People get only what they are willing to invest. Being a counselor allows me to understand this notion. I was met with resistance by many in solicitation of the idea of teaching anger management online. One expressed that she believed the clients who take the live course get something therapeutic from the interaction with other clients in the class. She like others perceives anger management as treatment. Anger Management is education that can have therapeutic value, but I stress it is not treatment and has never been treatment. Unfortunately she isn't looking at reality, magically believing that attending and interacting with others would automatically benefit the client. I have had clients sleep, be just there for the courts, be disruptive, be resistant and even get into verbal altercations accompanied with potential trouble seeking behavior. Sometimes these behaviors sabotaged the others from learning. So there you have it, you will get what you ultimately put into a program. This even applies for treatment. Ultimately you have the power to change yourself, no one else can. Now is the time to prove to yourself and others that you can change and grow for the better. ![]() copyright 2006 Joseph D. Hayes
